Art and
Morality
Two close scales; two far
Away poles. One relation
Close and harmonious,
The other keenly
Aware of conflicting
Tensions between them.
Art can be vital
To our moral health; it brings
Into play, expresses,
Purges emotions
And energies that in real
Life situations
Could be harmful and
Destructive. It allows us
Without any risk
To explore in depth
The essential natural
Endless archetypes
Of human virtue
And socially meaningful
Interactive deeds.
Appreciating
Art is a contemplative
Attention to the
Uniqueness of its
Objects, and respecting and
Loving them for what
They are, despite their
Perceived apparent flaws…
It’s all in the head!
Art enlarges the
Scope of individual
Freedom, by spreading
Awareness of our
Options for action and throes
At human bearings
Beyond those that are
Discernible in everyday
High paced society.
Art enhances our
Human vitality through
A keen, more vivid
Perception of colours
Forms, and sounds of which we are
Not often aware,
And a more intense
And clarified awareness
Of values as such.
Nevertheless, art
Can also be morally
Dubious or harmful.
Disinterested
Calmly contemplative
Aesthetic attitudes
Have forever faced
Very critical challenges.
It is claimed that
Art stimulates some
Passions better
not aroused;
It’s ideation’s
Unequivocal
Best friend to realize and
To enjoy morally
Deplorable trends.
If freedom can be enhanced
By art, it can too
Be diminished by
Art works that present current
Stereotypes, fashions
In attitudes, and
Actions farouche or debased
Visions of human
Nature as if these
Alone were the available
Models for a rich
Life, a little ground
For confidence that the search
For innovation
Or la difference
In art reliably leads
To morally grave
And wise rendition
Of human problems intent
For our salvation.
